When we first saw (and heard) the Velodyne SC-IW in-wall subwoofer, we instantly fell in love! Here was another completely invisible sound solution that is a perfect compliment to our AIW Series invisible speakers. So it’s only natural that we have teamed up with Redline, the exclusive UK distributor for Velodyne, to jointly market the Amina AIW Series alongside the Velodyne SC-IW.

When people first see Amina’s invisible speaker technology at a home show, dealer showroom, or elsewhere, they immediately experience a sense of wonder. “How can this possibly be happening?”, they ask. They wonder how such incredible sound can come from a blank wall. They wonder how it works, and especially how it is installed. So I thought I’d put our installation video on YouTube for everyone to see how Amina speakers are installed.

The designers and Architects totally get it, and obviously it has nothing to do with being a woman or a man! They not only see the value of completely hidden speaker or AV systems that only enhances their designs, but are ecstatic to lose the distractions and obstacles that any box or grill creates to the eye. To further be able to provide a complete `smart home` solution through our trained and certified installers is like taking a huge responsibility of their shoulders.
We employ both male and female reps in an industry that is completely dominated by man. I think that fact provides our company a great advantage. Not that a female rep actually gets easier acceptance with the resellers, due to the fact that she is a woman, but rather that she can provide a first-hand report of what women like and dislike about sound and video equipment. In most high-end installations it is the woman that decides the look, and if she despises the look of `wall mounted or stand mounted speakers` it will be a cold day in hell to get her to agree with the husband and let him have his big sound system.

Somehow, men seem to place value on something that they can see and touch, show off, look at, ..admire. Women, on the other hand, appreciate the fact that not being able to see or touch something is of great value, but they also appreciate good quality audio as well as the next person. It is just the speaker boxes and the ugly grills in the walls and ceilings that they don’t like. Amina provides a different way of showing off; you can`t believe your ears, nor your eyes, by not seeing where the sound is coming from. Now that creates even better conversation topic for your next social!

The trade show circuit for audio / video companies like us typically consists of CES, CEDIA, EHX for residential, and InfoComm, NSCA for commercial, along with a smattering of smaller shows throughout the year. Although ROI is good for these shows, we decided to test other non-traditional shows, which brings us to Toronto next week for the Interior Design Show. We’re partnering with one of our select dealers in Canada, Artistic Smart Homes. We hope to see you there!

Amina flat panel speakers can also be built into furniture, such as conference tables or wall units, as it can transmit through solid, rigid materials such as hardwood, MDF, ply and man-made materials, milled down to up to 3/16 inch thick, except through materials with high resonance such as glass and metal. For those applications we use specifically designed devices. Whether mounted behind 3/16″ MDF or hardwood, or mounted in a gypsum wall, covered with stucco, the device showed no signs of the sound being impeded by the finish. Even outside weatherproof applications are possible, as the AIW unit would be sealed into it’s own environment by the exterior finish, such as exterior stucco or compound and paint. We also have a specific exciter for fibreglass tub installations, and have even done pools with AIW’s behind the tiled surface.

An even larger benefit (tom the Amina technology) is in the phase response, in which the time/phase relationship between fundamentals and harmonics create the timbre, the voicing or signature of the instruments. From a planar surface there is only one point-in-time from which the sound originates, This means no multiple devices combining complex waveforms with harmonic shift causing a change of timbre and coloration, but only one point in time that produces all fundamentals and harmonic content at the same time. Hence the performance of the product is more true to the original sound source than any cone-driven device, providing a very realistic sonic performance.
Gain before feedback is much higher than conventional speakers as well, due to the absence of a concentrated beam of energy inherent to single point source drivers. For all these reasons, it is paramount that the sale of the product, the design of the system, as well as the actual installation are all done by trained individuals that understand the design principles and proper applications.

The dispersion characteristics of the Amina in-wall speakers are half sphere, 180 degrees. Even at 85 degrees off-axis, the listener still gets the same type of frequency response as those that are sitting on-axis to the speaker (the panel produces a figure-8 di-polar response front to back in free air, resulting in a 1/2 sphere once isolated by a wall). In stereo reproduction the “sweet spot” is no longer a single location, rather the stereo spectrum can be enjoyed throughout the room. Over the complete half sphere dispersion angle there is no discernable change in frequency-power response. All frequencies, including the high-end, remain virtually the same.
This has been verified in measurements done by the University of Delft, a copy of which is available in PDF format. This dispersion cannot be achieved by point-source cone shaped or dome shaped piston-driven devices, nor by ribbon arrays. It can only be obtained by utilizing a technique that creates thousands of point sources, in other words, a defused soundfield. The TUD measurements, as well as polar plots will allow a trained Audio designer to quickly ascertain that the products’ performance are like no other equivalent product, and studying these measurements will aid in the understanding of the concepts of AIW technology. The 180 degree dispersion pattern, combined with a longer path of consistent amplitude allows for less units within the same space, as the rate of loss-over-distance is substantially less than conventional speakers with each doubling of distance, much like the behaviour found in line array technology (inverse square law, equal to 6db loss for each distance squared from a single point source does not equate with planar ribbon-like devices due to the constructive addition of multiple point-sources within ½ their wavelength). Just to compare, whereas sufficient coverage over a certain area would require the use of four conventional speakers, a single AIW would provide an even superior coverage. Less product to install, less interfering point sources, hence higher intelligibility.

Frequency response for Amina flat panel loudspeakers has been intentionally limited below 120Hz and goes to 22 kHz for most models. HP filters keep LF vibration out of the device, and hence the wall. Though by definition considered a full range device, the LF or sub effects for music and video audio reproduction should be routed to a conventional subwoofer or other LF stand-alone or in-wall device, which is recommended in these applications.
